FIRST NATIONS, METIS, AND INUIT EDUCATION
Livingstone Range School Division shares a commitment with the Ministry of Education that all First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students have the opportunity to achieve or exceed the educational outcomes established for Alberta students.
Fulfilling this commitment requires targeted supports and close collaboration to eliminate gaps in achievement and engagement and improve student retention and graduation rates of First Nations, Metis and Inuit students.
Livingstone Range School Division supports a holistic understanding of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures, worldviews, histories, languages, contributions, perspectives, experiences and contemporary contexts. Effective practices that contribute to positive learning experiences, improved student well-being and increased success are an integral part of an inclusive, nurturing and welcoming LRSD environment. Strong respectful relationships are essential to fostering and honoring the students' stories, cultures, and languages while seamlessly blending Aboriginal culture and curriculum to maximize learning.
Livingstone Range School Division is dedicated to providing the foundational knowledge about First Nations, Metis, and Inuit to enhance teacher capacity, awareness, understanding, and competency in regards to Aboriginal based knowledge and learning practices to support and teach Alberta learning outcomes to all students.
In the spirit of collaboration, Livingstone Range School Division strives to build strong relationships with all schools and school authorities; First Nations and First Nations organizations;Kainai Board of Education; Piikani Board of Education; interagency partners; the Metis Settlements of Alberta; Metis General Council; the Metis Nation of Alberta; Indigenous and Northern Affairs; and other ministries; to support the success of Livingstone Range School Division First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students.
"Education is our buffalo" is a phrase often used by First Nations elders to signify the importance of education to their communities. (Christensen 2000). As one Treaty 7 member stated (Alberta Education 2002) "I believe that education is our buffalo. If any changes for the good are to be made it will be education that does the job. It doesn't matter where you send your kids; you need to support them to succeed---to give them a chance to succeed."
The First Nations Education Council will support and foster the continued relationship and academic achievement of First Nations students and partnerships with First Nations stakeholders.

First Nations and Inuit Hope for Wellness Helpline, open 24/7: 1 855 242 3310
The Hope for Wellness Help Line is to provide immediate culturally competent telephone-based crisis intervention counseling to First Nations and Inuit young people and adults experiencing distress. Help Line calls will be answered by experienced crisis intervention counselors, and service will be available in English and French. Callers may also ask about the availability of service in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktitut.
